juwi solar Selects Solar Frontier for Largest CIS Solar Project in North America

Santa Clara, Calif – Solar Frontier announced today that it has been selected by juwi solar Inc. (JSI), to supply 3.8 megawatts of solar modules for a project to be operated by a regulated utility in the Northeast United States. When the project is completed by the end of 2011, it will be the largest Solar Frontier installation to date in North America, and one of the largest solar projects in the Northeast. It is the latest competitive win in Solar Frontier’s global strategy to work with nationally and globally leading companies.

The solar panels will be produced at Solar Frontier’s new gigawatt-scale Kunitomi plant in Miyazaki, Japan, using Solar Frontier’s proprietary CIS technology (“CIS” stands for key ingredients copper, indium and selenium). The Kunitomi factory is unparalleled for its combination of advanced automation, scale, and low-energy, end-to-end processing.

“Achieving this milestone project immediately after opening our gigawatt-scale factory in Japan highlights the commercial attraction of our CIS modules,” said Greg Ashley, COO of Solar Frontier Americas. “Our work with JSI is a strong indicator of the growing confidence that global markets have in Solar Frontier’s economical and ecological solar panels.”

“JSI provides the most competitive utility-scale solar developments for our clients,” said Michael Martin, managing director at JSI, “and Solar Frontier’s CIS technology will allow us to deliver a low cost of energy and long-term, reliable energy production for this project and its long-term owner.”

About Solar Frontier

Solar Frontier, a 100% subsidiary of Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K., established the world’s first gigawatt-scale CIS module factory in 2011 with a mission to create the most economical, ecological solar energy solutions in the world, on the world’s largest scale. Solar Frontier’s proprietary CIS technology, denoting key ingredients copper, indium, and selenium (in addition to gallium and sulfur), has the best overall potential to set the world’s most enduring standard for solar energy. This is based on our legacy of work in solar technology since the 1970s, the priority focus our laboratories have given to CIS since 1993, and our success in large scale CIS commercialization since 2007. The critical factors that combine to make CIS the overall economical and ecological leader include high efficiency modules and production processes as well as superior reliability, stability, sustainability, non-toxicity, and lower overall energy consumption in manufacturing to yield a faster energy payback time. These factors at gigawatt scale enable Solar Frontier to meet worldwide demand for the new standard in affordable solar panel performance. Visit www.solar-frontier.com for more information.
