Project Developer

Project Developer

Department: Business Development

Function:

The Project Developer is responsible for securing land positions, negotiating LOIs and lease/purchase options, the successful development, including entitlement, permitting and environmental compliance, for projects to which he or she is assigned. The Project Developer will establish and manage the development schedule and development budget.  During the development phase of a project, the Project Developer will represent the company’s interests in front of authorities having jurisdiction such as city councils, zoning commissions, and planning commissions.  In connection with the project financing process, the Project Developer will prepare permitting summaries and will address questions and issues raised by juwi’s customers on these matters.  During the construction phase of a project, the Project Developer will  ensure compliance with all project permits.  The Project Developer will work closely with the Business Development, Project Management, Engineering, Construction, Legal and Finance teams to ensure timely and smooth project development.

Position Description:
In addition to the functional responsibilities described above, the Project Developer:

 

  • Participates as an integral member of the Project Development team;
  • Identifies land parcels meeting the Company’s solar development requirements;
  • Secures land positions for the Company;
  • Supports in-house title in gathering, organizing and analyzing title documents and performing internal title updates;
  • Works with in-house GIS resources to guide land screening activities;
  • Engages landowners in land acquisition discussions about project site opportunities;
  • Supports drafting of LOI, option and lease agreements;
  • Negotiates LOIs, options and lease agreements with landowners;
  • Travels to site locations to meet with landowners and evaluate sites;
  • Maintains a working relationship with landowners;
  • Coordinates and distributes work assignments when the workload requires using contract personnel for lease acquisitions;
  • Writes summary land reports documenting the landscape of leasing options;
  • Assists in title curative work;
  • Identifies and selects viable utility-scale solar energy generation facility locations, including the identification of property ownership, topography, insolation, and interconnection;
  • Confers with internal team members to ensure potential land use, zoning, and environmental risks and costs are understood prior to committing to a project site;
  • Generates and manages development schedules and budgets reflecting research into permitting and site study requirements, timeframes, and costs and periodically reports progress;
  • Oversees the development and permitting processes for specific projects, including:
    • supporting the Engineering team in the interconnection process,
    • selecting and managing consulting firms (e.g. environmental site studies, surveying, permitting support and regulatory compliance),
    • consulting on the selection of a civil design firm,
    • supporting site design efforts,
    • managing all land use and zoning approvals, site studies and environmental permitting, and
    • ensuring compliance with all permits and approvals;
  • Advises the Business Development, Project Management, Legal, Engineering, Construction, and other teams to ensure a comprehensive understanding of project permitting requirements, a smooth handoff between development and project management and a successful, cost effective, and efficient project development process;
  • Manages community outreach and public stakeholder communication and education;
  • Manages outside counsel on project-specific land use, zoning, and environmental issues; and
  • Works with landowners on permitting and approval processes.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree: planning, civil engineering, construction management, environmental, natural resources degree or relevant work experience preferred.

  • Minimum of five years of experience in land sourcing, project development, permitting/planning.

The Origination team member will be responsible and accountable for executing the origination strategy of the company in the North American market.  The Origination professional will work closely with the company’s senior management group, Finance and Legal teams as well as the BD team leadership to execute the company’s origination goals. FUNCTION:

The Manager, Systems Engineering is responsible for juwi’s initial system design activities including plant generation modeling and high-level system design. The Manager will be involved with projects at the early stage of development and continually contribute refinements as pricing, site feasibility and interconnection design evolve. The Manager will provide technical support during project engineering and construction as needed and evaluate and direct test efforts related to project performance during the operations phase. The Manager is responsible for technical and commercial aspects of generation models and performance guarantees and will suitably defend analysis and supporting assumptions under third party engineer review.

FUNCTION:

The Project Planner is responsible for the successful entitlement, permitting and environmental compliance for projects to which he or she is assigned. The Project Planner will establish and manage the permitting schedule and budget.  During the development phase of a project, the Project Planner will represent the company’s interests in front of authorities having jurisdiction such as city councils, zoning commissions, and planning commissions.  The Project Planner will manage consultants that provide subject matter expertise. POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Execute the permitting processes for specific projects, including:
    • manage all land use and zoning approvals, site studies, environmental permitting, and driveway and building permit submittals, etc. and
    • select and manage consulting firms (e.g. environmental site studies, surveying, permitting support and regulatory compliance),
    • ensure site designs comply with all permits,
    • ensure execution-phase compliance with all permits and approvals;
  • Research and understand the viability of potential utility-scale solar farm sites, including zoning, land use, topography, transportation master plan conflicts, drainage, and master plan considerations. Using state and federal data, research the presence of wetlands, streams, floodplain, and endangered or threatened species.
  • Research permitting requirements specific to identified sites.
    • Identify applicable city, county, state and federal code and statutes regarding land use at sites.
    • Identify applicable permitting agencies, contact information, regulations, expected review timeframes, and fees.
    • Provide this information to the rest of the Project Development team for review and analysis.
  • Work with landowners on permitting and approval processes.
  • Develop and manage budgets, schedules, and summaries related to permitting.
  • Support the identification of potential sites for locating utility-scale renewable energy projects.

FUNCTION:

The Associate Landman will work collaboratively with and receive assignments from the Senior Landman who is tasked with securing land positions for the company across the United States. He or she is a point of contact with landowners and will perform all aspects of land acquisition including: searching public records, negotiation of price and terms, completing due diligence, and executing various land contracts. The Associate Landman works closely with the Project Development, Business Development, and Legal teams regarding land strategy.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

To perform this role, the Associate Landman is expected to:

  • Initiate communication and establish/maintain working relationships with prospective landowners with enthusiasm and accuracy
  • Work with landowners to outline and understand development limits, access, and other site considerations that could affect solar array layout and installation

Entry Level Electrical Engineer

juwi has established an aggressive target for bringing solar power on line over the next several years and is seeking an Interconnection Engineer to support the company’s growth.  juwi is seeking a capable professional who has demonstrated talent in analysis, electrical modeling, and AutoCAD.

FUNCTION:

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for certain development-stage interconnection efforts and will provide support during project engineering, construction and operations activities.  The Electrical Engineer will become familiar with and help improve electrical grid software models representing systems throughout the US.  The Electrical Engineer will work closely with juwi’s project development team to contribute to the feasibility and attractiveness of developing certain project sites from the perspective of interconnection.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Gain a strong understanding of juwi projects’ major system components and design concepts, supporting juwi’s engineering team in the development of detailed designs.
  • Review study reports from transmission and interconnection providers and recommend action.
  • Perform initial plant modeling with preliminary designs.
  • Understand grid control and protection schemes and solutions to verify initial design compliance with transmission provider requirements.
  • Perform cost-benefit analysis associated with different interconnection options (e.g. locations, voltages, capacities).
  • Seek and review telecom options at feasible interconnection locations to determine initial availability, capacity, cost and deployment schedule.
  • Contribute to project electrical designs during development and provide input into design details.
  • Gain experience to perform fault and arc flash evaluations and reports for facilities in the design stage.

    • relevant IEEE, UL and FERC standards; and,
