Interconnection Engineer

Interconnection Engineer

FUNCTION:

The Interconnection Engineer is responsible for all of juwi’s development-stage interconnection activities and will provide support during project engineering, construction and operations.  The Interconnection Engineer will develop and maintain working relationships with consulting engineers, utility interconnection departments and RTO contacts.  The Interconnection Engineer will work closely with juwi’s project development team to contribute to the feasibility and attractiveness of developing certain project sites from the perspective of interconnection.  The Interconnection Engineer will, independently and through consultants, study various points of interconnection and review results from utilities and consultants.  For selected project sites, the Interconnection Engineer will complete interconnection applications and be the primary point of contact for those processes.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Prepare and submit interconnection applications and act as the primary point of contact for the interconnection provider; track queue position,study progress, and critical decision dates.
  • Prepare and submit transmission service requests and act as the primary point of contact for the transmission provider; track queue position, study progress, and critical decision dates.
  • Review publicly available studies for target utilities and areas of the grid to contribute to the site selection process.
  • Create and issue scopes of work for consultants and follow-up on consultant reports.
  • Review study reports from transmission and interconnection providers and recommend action.
  • Perform initial plant modeling with preliminary design when required and in conjunction with Electrical Engineer.
  • Understand grid control schemes and solutions to verify initial design compliance with transmission provider requirements.
  • Perform cost-benefit analysis associated with different interconnection options (e.g. locations, voltages, capacities).
  • Seek and review telecom options at feasible interconnection locations to determine initial availability, capacity, cost and deployment schedule.
  • Stay current on
    • the state-of-the-art solar generation equipment,
    • relevant IEEE, UL and FERC standards; and, interconnection processes for target interconnection providers in the US.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree from an accredited university in electrical engineering, or equal work experience;
  • Professional Engineer license a plus
  • A solid understanding power generation and interconnection principles
  • Proficiency in SKM, Aspen, ETAP, PSS/E, AutoCAD, or similar software packages
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook applications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness to work flexible and long hours
  • Demonstrated efficiency in managing multi-disciplinary tasks

Development Engineer

Development Engineer

FUNCTION:

The Development Engineer is responsible for managing, coordinating, and facilitating all engineering activities occurring during the development phase of a project. Primary responsibilities of this role include (but are not limited to): initial site assessment, site layouts, material take-offs, cost estimation, interconnection work, and providing technical proposal deliverables as needed. The Development Engineer is a key member of the project development team, and works directly with colleagues in the engineering and business development groups.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Design/engineer layouts for solar PV projects using AutoCAD, including the layout of civil, mechanical and electrical features and components.
  • Model anticipated project costs based upon site design parameters.
  • Perform optimization work related to project layouts and costs in collaboration with other engineering disciplines.
  • Collaborate with engineers, construction managers, project managers and developers to identify project constraints and opportunities.
  • Support land negotiations and project permitting by providing planning-level site layouts and details, as necessary.
  • Support interconnection efforts as needed, from application preparation through impact study review.
  • Review Requests for Proposals and contribute to the creation of project proposals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree from an accredited university in an engineering discipline;
  • A solid understanding of engineering principles; familiarity with PV system technologies and energy systems a plus

Systems Engineer (Energy Modeling)

FUNCTION:

The Systems Engineer will be responsible for using and developing simulation tools to optimize photovoltaic (“PV”) system designs, model PV power plant performance, and estimate solar energy generation.  The Systems Engineer will execute generation models and provide technical support and documentation for business development, project development, and project financing efforts.  The Systems Engineer will also support project technology selection, system optimization (both in performance and cost), and long-term research through hourly simulations, parametric analysis, data analysis of existing juwi projects, and the technical review of existing and new equipment.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Execute PV system energy generation model simulations for initial project proposals and project financing
  • Support project technology selection, initial system design, and system optimization (both in performance and cost) through performance simulations, parametric analyses, data analyses for existing juwi projects, and the technical review of current and new equipment technologies
  • Develop and manage software tools that can be utilized to optimize PV system design and minimize the cost of solar energy and/or overall system cost
  • Support system optimization efforts by critically analyzing current design and installation practices, equipment selection, specifications, and plant performance
  • Validate generation modeling tools and assumptions by analyzing performance data, conducting field experiments, and monitoring published industry research
  • Provide technical support to the Business Development group by reviewing Request for Proposal (“RFP”) technical sections, producing technical writing for RFPs, and performing related follow-on work during the execution stage of the project
  • Perform solar resource assessments with satellite and ground-based data for upcoming projects
  • Collaborate with the Operations group to analyze plant performance data, support system troubleshooting, and verify contractual performance obligations
  • Create technical documents suitable for review by project investors and lenders
  • Research and write technical white papers on PV plant design, performance, and optimization for internal and external publication
  • Support on-going equipment testing and the testing and qualification of new equipment

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree from Accredited University in Solar Energy Engineering, Energy Engineering or related Engineering field, a Masters Degree is preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience working as an Engineer in energy or generation related field with at least 2 years of direct experience in utility-scale PV applications
  • Comprehensive knowledge of PV systems and a detailed understanding of energy generation principles
  • Extensive experience in computer simulations, PVSYST, MATLAB, MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Some experience with software development a plus
  • Must possess extensive analytical skills with the ability to perform detailed data analysis techniques
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to travel and willingness to work flexible and long hours
  • Demonstrated efficiency in managing multi-disciplinary tasks and meeting deadlines

Project Developer

Project Developer

Function:

The Project Developer is responsible for securing land positions, negotiating LOIs and lease/purchase options, the successful development, including entitlement, permitting and environmental compliance, for projects to which he or she is assigned. The Project Developer will establish and manage the development schedule and development budget.  During the development phase of a project, the Project Developer will represent the company’s interests in front of authorities having jurisdiction such as city councils, zoning commissions, and planning commissions.  In connection with the project financing process, the Project Developer will prepare permitting summaries and will address questions and issues raised by juwi’s customers on these matters.  During the construction phase of a project, the Project Developer will  ensure compliance with all project permits.  The Project Developer will work closely with the Business Development, Project Management, Engineering, Construction, Legal and Finance teams to ensure timely and smooth project development.

Position Description:
In addition to the functional responsibilities described above, the Project Developer:

 

  • Participates as an integral member of the Project Development team;
  • Identifies land parcels meeting the Company’s solar development requirements;
  • Secures land positions for the Company;
  • Supports in-house title in gathering, organizing and analyzing title documents and performing internal title updates;
  • Works with in-house GIS resources to guide land screening activities;
  • Engages landowners in land acquisition discussions about project site opportunities;
  • Supports drafting of LOI, option and lease agreements;
  • Negotiates LOIs, options and lease agreements with landowners;
  • Travels to site locations to meet with landowners and evaluate sites;
  • Maintains a working relationship with landowners;
  • Coordinates and distributes work assignments when the workload requires using contract personnel for lease acquisitions;
  • Writes summary land reports documenting the landscape of leasing options;
  • Assists in title curative work;
  • Identifies and selects viable utility-scale solar energy generation facility locations, including the identification of property ownership, topography, insolation, and interconnection;
  • Confers with internal team members to ensure potential land use, zoning, and environmental risks and costs are understood prior to committing to a project site;
  • Generates and manages development schedules and budgets reflecting research into permitting and site study requirements, timeframes, and costs and periodically reports progress;
  • Oversees the development and permitting processes for specific projects, including:
    • supporting the Engineering team in the interconnection process,
    • selecting and managing consulting firms (e.g. environmental site studies, surveying, permitting support and regulatory compliance),
    • consulting on the selection of a civil design firm,
    • supporting site design efforts,
    • managing all land use and zoning approvals, site studies and environmental permitting, and
    • ensuring compliance with all permits and approvals;
  • Advises the Business Development, Project Management, Legal, Engineering, Construction, and other teams to ensure a comprehensive understanding of project permitting requirements, a smooth handoff between development and project management and a successful, cost effective, and efficient project development process;
  • Manages community outreach and public stakeholder communication and education;
  • Manages outside counsel on project-specific land use, zoning, and environmental issues; and
  • Works with landowners on permitting and approval processes.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree: planning, civil engineering, construction management, environmental, natural resources degree or relevant work experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in land sourcing, project development, permitting/planning.
  • Strong understanding of land title matters, land use, zoning, construction permitting, and environmental policy and law.
  • Understanding of local, state, and federal governments and regulations.
  • Ability to accurately work under pressure in meeting deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication and coordination skills.
